If a dog eats catfood too often it causes obesity and can cause other health problems because it is much too rich for dogs.

I feed my cat up high or in a room with a cat door to keep the dogs out of the food. If I didn't my cat would starve and my dogs would look terrible.

The only real difference between the two, are the balancing of the nutrients, cats need more of one thing, dogs may not need as much. I wouldn't recommend feeding cat food to a dog or dog food to a cat, but if they get into the cat's bowl, it won't kill them, it is just the nutrients inside the food that the dogs may not need.

No it will not hurt them. Over a long period of time it may not be healthy for them from a dietary stand point but your dog is not in immediate danger. You may see a change in your dogs stool because cat food is "richer", but other than that nothing else.

Cat food most that I have seen is higher in protein and I am sure it has got other differences so I would not feed just put it up out of way. I have seen a bunch of dogs eat cat food and none have shown signs of distress so I would not loose sleep but also I would try and prevent.

If it's a regular occurance, it will affect the dog (for one the taurine content's too high and can cause liver damage if not more), if it's once here and there, no.

Wow, some pretty diverse replies. haha My dog used to sneak upstairs every once in a while and eat my cat's food when he wasn't supposed to. He never had a problem at all. They're both carnivores, so although they need different nutrition from eachother, they should be fine if they don't eat it on a regular basis. Obviously don't feed them cat food, but they shouldn't be hurt by eating it.
