What happens in the second week of a puppys life

The family dog had puppies and the second week is right around the corner. What happens in the second week? Give me some answers I'm desprate.

The second week is a very critical stage of development. It is the week that the weak puppy, if there is one, will become more apparent. During the second week puppies are considerably stronger and nurse more vigorously and begin to "claim" their nipple. Often the smaller, weaker puppy will be overpowered and denied access to the best nipples producing the most milk. If unchecked, this is the puppy who may well not finish the week alive.

Weighing each puppy ever 12 hours on a kitchen scale will give you an idea how they are doing. Everyone should be gaining weight at a rate of 3/4 to 1 ounce daily for every 5 pounds of anticipated adult weight. There is often a day when someone stays the same but then catches up the next day--usually due to weakness after loosing the battle for the best nipple. This is the crucial time to start bottle feeding any puppy that seems to be less thrifty than the rest or who is not forcefully nursing. I like to keep goat milk from the dairy case of the grocer for bottle feeding. In a regular 5 ounce baby bottle, add one egg yolk and 1 tsp white Karo syrup to 4 ounces of goat milk. Warm to 100 degrees on the stove in a pan of water rather than in the microwave as the microwave gives a very uneven heat causing warm milk to become cold faster than you can feed the puppies. Use a thermometer to check the temp rather than just using your wrist because the puppies are still unable to regulate their own body temperatures and too hot or too cold can cause serious problems.
