What happens to me if I get hookworkms from my dog2007-11-25 2:52:16

my dog has hookworms. what will happen to me and my family if we become infected??? the vet gave him hookworm medicine, but will happen to us if we become infected??? is it deadly? how can we get rid of them?? plz answer, im really scared.

firstly, you shouldnt have allowed your dog to get worms. you need to worm him with appropriate dog medication every month or so (use according to directions). worms can be serious for dogs and can kill them in extreme cases.

dog worms and human worms are different species (for hook worms it is as follows - human species - Necator americanus, dog species - Ancylostoma caninum or Uncinaria stenocephala).

unlike what the general population thinks, you can NOT catch the dog worms... even if by some miracle you did, they wont live longer than a day in your body - each species of worm has different environment requirements.

ANY vet or breeder who tells you you can catch dog worms is an idiot - change vets quick.

you can however, catch human worms from the eggs that will be on the dogs coat from when he goes outside. just keep the dog clean, wash hands after playing with him.

theres not much you can do.

you should be worming your human family as a part of a regular healthy plan anyway.

Hookworms are in your dog 's intestines. That is were they attach themselves to. Causing the dog anemia,poor appetite,dog can act very tired and have black tarry stools.
