You are right, grains are not necessary in a canine diet. They are carnivores. Nutro is not great, but not as bad as some. Check this out for info on about any brand you can think of. Excellent resource:

wellness is a great food. we switched our dog to wellness from science diet and she is thriving on it. beautiful coat, less poop. no corn or wheat either. and no, you should not stay with your current brand. your dog will be healthier in the long run if you switch to one of the better brands ie: innova, cannidae, wellness, solid gold, etc. good luck.

No wheat, no corn, human grade ingredients..

Forget Iams, Beneful, All Purina, Eukanuba, Kibbles n Bits, Ol Roy, Pedigree, Science Diet etc.. They are all garbage foods that are preserved with cancer causing BHA/BHT or ethoxyquin, or cancer causing dyes, or use a Synthetic Vitamin K which makes the body not be able to normally use K from other sources. Horrible foods..

Good Quality dogfood, might seem like it costs more but they actually eat far less and get their nutrition easier from the quality foods.

My chihuahua only eats Pro Plan Lamb and Rice formula. It doesn't contain corn or wheat and has DHA added for healthy growth and cellular development. It can be found at Petco. It's good food, but a 6 pound bad is over $10 But, as I say, my dog is like my child and he will get only the healthiest food!

If you asked this question a week ago I would tell you that Nutro is one of the few petstore band foods I recommend and to continue to feed it to your dog, BUT in one of the latest veterinary journals it disclosed that the same manufacturer that makes Iams and Euk. has recently bought Nutro. And we all know how horrible Iams/Euk is, eh. So, my advise to you would to continue to feed Nutro (if you are happy with it) but to please keep a very close eye on the ingredients and please make note of any changes you observe with the ingredients!

If you are looking for an organic/human-grade pet food I hightly recommend Timberwolf Organics (www.timberwolforganics.com). It is more expensive, but you certainly get what you pay for! If that is too pricey... Canidae is also a good brand.
