Why not look into a retired racing greyhound. They come leash trained, and if they're been in a foster home, they'll be housetrained and be used to living in a house. The rescue groups are very good about matching up the right dog with the right person. I've never had one who hasn't been smart, well mannered, incredibly affectionate and good with people - kids and adults alike.

They're calm and quiet in the house, but love going out for their walks. You can get just about any age dog you want. Most of them are very dog friendly, but many are not safe with cats. The one and only down side to a greyhound is they can never be let off leash in an unfenced area.

Don't know how to spell it, chiuaua. (chi-wa-wa) They are so cute. And they're shorthaired. Get a tea cup one. CUTE!!!

Miniature dachshunds!! I have two and they are active but then after they get their playtime for the day they'll calm down. They are so cute and have so much personality. You'll love a dachshund if you get one.
