Research pros and cons of both before you decide.
I don't like either one. Here is why: they both shed, they need shots, they need to be fed, they need attention, they leave body waste either in your house or on your yard. You have to pay someone to watch them and can not leave them alone while you go on vacation. They get angy at you and let you know by making a mess when you are gone. You have to train them, they ruin your clothes and it is one more responsibility that I don't want.
In terms of trainability and range of interactions with humans .. the dog
but when looking a factors such as cost to care for, demand on time and maintenance, freedom to able to go away for a day or a weekend the cat becomes the better pet
I have 4 dogs and 2 cats
