Poodles and Papillions are social and need to be around people a lot. They will need good socialization. The poodles will not shed but will need grooming to keep their coats from overgrowing. The Papillion is also a lap dog a companion dog who will need to attach to a person to be healthy. Their coats aren't as demanding as the poodle's but will need some care. Also since they are not as popular and available, they may not be as prone to poor breeding as the poodle. But the need to see and evaluate the 2 parents that they come from is still desirable. Make sure that a vet examines the puppy that you choose. Try to read up on the two breeds and see which one will truly fit in with your lifestyle and ability to provide for their needs.

I wouldn't like to deal with the grooming requirements of the Toy Poodle so I'd get the Papillon.

It really depends what you are getting the dog for. Each breed has it's characteristis, and each dog has it's own personality. I'd say - forget about the breed (they're both great) and go see breeders and individual pups. Choose the one that best suits you. Personally I love poodles. I've had 3, one was a nervous wreck, one was a loner, and the 3rd is extremely hyper. But they all were raised the same way.
