Your dog will really need to see a vet to get an examination and possibly have the swelling removed (if a tumor) or drained (if it is flilled with liquid).
I have an almost 12 yr old, and if his leg had any perceptible swelling, I would be asking for x-rays. Mast-cells have been known to form inside as well as being visible on the outside of the dog. I am near Davis, a teaching hospital, and if my local vet could not come up with a diagnosis, I would be heading there or someplace like it.
have you contacted your breeder to ask if this is something they have ever seen? When in doubt, they are usually the best source of health info.
Give him 1 bayer asprin every day. I've been doing it for years for my older dogs.
