What is done to the dogs when spayed/neutered
When a male dog is neutered, their testicles are removed, making it impossible for them to father puppies.
And before you ask your next question, no, it's not mean. It's meaner to bring more unwanted puppies into the world. And unspayed/unneutered dogs can have real health problems later on in life, like cancers, etc.
It only takes them a few days to heal, and they're so much better off because the girls don't go into heat, the boys don't want to fight all the time, and there's no humping going on.
for the males, the penis remains in tact however the scrotum is cut open and all of the insides are removed. the scrotum is where all of the sexual hormones like testosterone are made and once these hormones are out of their system they either never learn about mating because it was done at a young age or they continue on with the habitual behaviors such as spraying and mounting other cats-not sex just dry humping to show dominance (recently had my male cat neutered and the vet had to explain in detail to be what was done when I realized that he still sometimes got erections-the hormone is not yet out of his system)
for the female they also remove the internal organs however I do not know the specifics...I do know that it's a more expensive procedure to spay than it is to neuter, and my vet has informed me that this is because it's more of an internal operation than neutering is and that a more internal operation means a higher risk factor as well....
