Why teach your dog to walk on the left hand side? what is so important?

Answers:

It isn't important. It's just easier for most people to have their right hand free. Choose your side and go with it. It won't hurt your dog any.

The custom (and that is all it is) comes from a hunter that is right handed carries his shotgun in his right hand and his dog heels on the opposite side from the gun. You will find even today many left handed people train their dog to heel on the right.

You will also find that many field trialers train their dogs to heel on either side, and they will switch back and forth depending on the direction the birds are being thrown.

So,, you train your dog to heel on one side or the other inorder to make things easier on yourself, the dog doesn't care.

it actually has to do with what hand you are, you want him on the opposite side if your right her should be on the left vise versa this is when your training on a leash and how you handle the leash.

It's probably aimed more at people who do Showing or competition Obedience as they have to be on your left hand side for judging. Walk your dog on whatever side you feel more comfortable.

Old military/police tradition that had a right handed man with his gun on the right side and dog on left. Means absolutely nothing. All of my dogs heel on both sides and will change side on command.

.well i was watching a show on animal planet and it says that you should teach your dog to walk on the left side because if you do the it has a less chance of getting hit by a car because the cars are on your right side while she/he is on your left
