I have both. My cats are great lap warmers and my dogs are great in the yard friends and protectors. I have a pair of Himalayan cats and a pair of matched Shiloh Shepard's.

Thats silly to ask in a dog forum. haha I personally am a dog person, but I do love my cats. I can see both ways. Cats are very independant, [usually] calm, and very low-maintenance. Dogs are very diverse. They can be excellent at protecting you, at being companions for the elderly or disabled, exercise partners, hunting partners, anything really. The only 'downside' is that they are a huge responsibility and they need your devotion their entire lifetime. That's not really that bad of a deal to me. :].

I have both and find them equally likeable, intelligent, and playful.

Cats are lower maintenance, although a new kitten in my home will need to learn the house rules, no scratching or biting the furniture, no jumping on the table, no begging for food at the dining table, being nice, letting itself handle etc. Some cat owners don't find this necessary or they believe that cats can't be trained - and this is probably what gives cats a bad reputation sometimes.

My reasons for having both is, that a dog will protect me and my property - if only by its mere presence. Also, I like dog training and agility, and while you can get the same results with a cat, a dog usually have a longer attention span, and eagerness to please and work, so I can see faster progress.
