What is normal labor for canine milk is down2007-11-25 2:52:30

first litter. milk down 2wks. can palpate fetal movement. no spotting,cramping and strong contractions x 16 hrs now.

You need to contact your vet NOW! If she's been cramping and pushing and nothing then she may have fetal distress and need a ceasarian section. If she is not trying to push then she might not be truely contracting and you might be jumping the gun on the labor. A veterinarian will do an exam to see if her mucus plug is gone and can also do an X-ray of the pups to see if there is a positioning problem that would call for ceasarian. My boxer would always deliver the first pup and then stop and I would have to give her shots provided by my vet to get her going again. 16 hours is too long to have no pups. Your poor girl will be to weak to deliver if she's been laboring this long. Take her to the vet!

If your dog has been having strong contractions for the last 16 hours with no show of pups I recommend contacting your closest veterinarian as she may need a caesarian otherwise she may lose the pups - or worse, she may not make it either.

She should lose her mucus plug (1 gush of bloody w/ clear fluid) right before hard labor begins. I walked with my poodle for about 12 hrs before she lost her plug & the contractions began at regular intervals & hard. BUT, be safe & call the vet. They might want to see her to be sure all is well plus they'll be on alert if she has problems. Please don't leave her alone to handle it herself since this is her first litter. She may need help with the cord or placenta or if one of the pups gets stuck you'll to need help pull the baby out slowly.
