If you do decide to keep them outside [PLEASE DON'T], here's some tips for cold weather:

Dogs can freeze to death in cold temperatures; I've unfortunately seen it happen.

Straw or hay is better because it can hold a dog's body heat longer than blankets and such. Salt marsh hay is supposedly the best. Pile it about five inches deep. But change it and make sure it remains fresh and clean [should smell like cut grass, not moldy at all]. The doghouse itself should be an igloo-type, insulated and weatherproof and facing away from the wind [south or east, usually]. It should be off the ground. There should be a heavy flap hanging in the entrance. Put it somewhere where the sun will shine on it as long as possible.

Your dog should have a CONSTANT source of water. Not just a couple times a day. Check it constantly to make sure it hasn't frozen. A plastic bowl is better. Keep it above ground to keep it from freezing. A dark color is good too, so it absorbs sunlight. Also make sure it's always fresh and clean. Deeper bowls freeze more slowly. If you can, get a heated water bowl. Nutrition is very important in the cold. Give your dog high-quality food.

Check your dog's feet, especially if there is snow and ice. Keep its hair between its toes clipped short, as well as the nails. Make sure the pads aren't cut or irritated by the ice.

If your dog starts shivering, he is too cold.
