usually, it does NOT stop the dog barking, it just makes the barking quieter - you will still hear him from your house if he is in the backyard. vocal chords are not "removed" (unless your vet doesnt know exactly what he is doing).
also, in some cases, scar tissue can form which can make the bark louder instead of quieter.
take responsibility and train your dog instead of putting him through unnecessary surgery.

Surely to God you are not talking about keeping this dog from barking by an operational means!!! If so, give the dog to someone who will love it and take care of it. That wouldn't be fair to the dog to keep it from barking. I am sure there are people out their that don't want to hear you talk but are you going to keep your mouth shut? Don't think so! Leave the poor dog alone and get a quiet animal. Actually, I think you would be better off without an animal.
i don't think that can be done but you never know. if you want a dog that don't bark then you should of got a basenji that is tha only kind of dog that don't bark it sound like a cry. the best person to talk to is a vet, a breeder, or a specialist.
why would you do such a thing to your precious pet?though i have never heard of debarking,it sounds totally inhumane.

Someone said that when his dogs were debarked the vet widens the space between the vocal cords. That's complete and utter rubbish, and shows how little he knows about his precious dogs. To debark a dog the vocal cords are BURNT. (I suppose that would create some space!) If you're not prepared to work with your dog, perhaps you'd be better re-homing to someone who will. You wouldn't find a vet in the UK who would do such a procedure, and I would hope that vets in the USA feel the same way.
Thats terrible!! If you really hate its barking then sell it or give it away to a good home and buy a dog that doesn't bark. Or get it professinally trained. Dogs need to be able to bark. Not only would it be less abusive, it would be alot cheaper too.
