Get an alarm system. Dogs are family member who will be there for you but if you want your home protected, buy an alarm. If you need protection yourself, maybe you should change your lifestyle and surround yourself with better people?

The breed of dog does not matter so much as the training.

An untrained breed of any sort will NOT make a good guard dog. A good deterrent? Possibly. But definitly not a device you can count on to protect you in the face of danger.

I think using a dog as a source of protection is a terrible idea, but if you decide you must, choose the breed of dog you prefer, and have it trained for protection in accordance to police/military K-9 training.

Keep in mind that this training is vigirous and takes a high amount of time/effort.

Since you're asking this quesiton, you are NOT a professional and will only end up in pain, sorrow and broke with the lawsuits and injuries brought about trying to train a dog to be a guard dog.

Rotties are always the first choice for guard dogs, and do well at their job (but they can be big lugs with friends & fam)
