What is the best way to calm my dog down2007-11-25 2:52:01

i have a husky who is almost a year old. he is crazy. when we leave he loves to chew the couches apart. he has taken obidence classes and it doesn't seem to help him at all. i have an appt to get him fixed next month but i dont know if it will reallyhelp him settle down. he has a cage that we put him in when he is bad, but i hate leaving him in there when im gone all day. i really dont know what to do anymore with him. i love him to death. he can be a really good dog too, he just loves to chew everything apart and its driving me crazy. any suggestions on how to calm him down?

Answers:

Exercise. Huskies can easily run several hundred miles a day, they are also known for chewing, therefore they make lousy apartment dogs.

Get a Springer or Walky, an attachment for your bicycle and let him go a nice steady loping pace for miles while you ride.

Get him Kongs and stuff it with his food. Get Buster Cubes and any of those other toys to give him his regular ration of food, make it a challenge so he'll use his mind, dont' just hand it to him.

Neuter him immediately ( I see this is in the works)

And take him to obedience/manners training. He needs mental stimulation as well as lots of exercise. We often forget about the mental stimulation. It is as important as physical exertion to bring a dog into balance, if you will.

use aggression and be assertive with him. there's nothing better than hearing the voice of a male to control a dog's moods/ways

Take him for walks before you leave, nice long walks; this will tire him out and will be healthy for you!
