What is the best way to housetrain a pug puppy2007-11-25 2:52:04

I have a purebred black pug puppy and for the most part she is friendly, but sometimes she gets so excited that she freaks out and either has really odd temperment or does her business in the house.

Have you tried crate training? Get a dog crate that is just big enough to allow your dog to stand up, lie down, and turn around. Use treats, toys, and positive training to make the crate somewhere fun to be. Then when you go out, put her in the crate. Since it's small and she considers it her den, she shouldn't relieve herself in there. When you get home, immediately take her out and give her lots of praise for doing what she's supposed to.

If you catch her in the act of going in the house, startle her (with the aforementioned penny can, by clapping, or whatever). Then immediately take her out and praise her if she does her business outside. If you don't catch her in the act, just clean up the mess with a cleaner that will eliminate the smell. She won't understand if you scold her.

If you think her housebreaking issues are being caused by too much excitement, try to keep things a little more low key. For example, avoid making a huge fuss over her when you get home. Just say hi, maybe pat her head, then go sit down or whatever you were going to do.

Crate training her on a strict schedule with enormous praise when she does right and ignoring when she does wrong will help her in her housetraining. Pugs are notoriously stubborn with their housetraining but respond very well to praise.
