What is the best way to potty train a 24 week old chihuahua2007-11-25 2:52:05

We just got a chihuahua yesterday and it is not potty trained...we would like to know how to do this, as we dont have much dog experience.right now, we have training pads down :) thanks!

Usually what works for me is an empty Coke can with coins. The loud noise scares them but you have to do it when they are doing it. If you find it later after he/she has gone it's a lost cause. Hitting them does NOT work and is cruel. Saying their name when angry confuses them and makes them think that their name is "bad." When they go elsewhere and you are done shaking the can, take them to the pad and say "goood" so they know that the pad is the right place. I have done this soooooooo many times and my little chihuahua is hardheaded (maybe that's them?)

I have one that is pad trained and still has accidents from time to time so it's not like you will ever get them to ALWAYS 100% go on the pad. For the most part he is very good at it though.

spend lots of time with him, every time you see him using the pads, put him outside

it will take a long time, bt it works

if not, put him out about 5 times aday, he will soon get the idea

If possible it's better to get them to go outside, but if the baby will be alone a lot pads are excellent. I also use them as I am disabled and not always able to get them outside.
