What is the best way to remove porcupine needles from a dog2007-11-25 2:52:06

I have two dogs that have porcupine needles on their face what is the safest way to remove them without taking them in? Please Help!

For God's sake take them IN to the VET!

The secondary infection will KILL your dogs. Plus it hurts like hell.

Porc needles are extremely painful, and will 99.999% of the time become infected and your dog will suffer terribly. Please please PLEASE have them removed properly and cleaned properly and put on antibiotics.

Don't mean to ignore the question...but you really need to take them in. This happend to my friends dog and she took her in no questiond ask they remove them in a special way so it won't make the dogs internally bleed or get an infection!

if your uncomforable take them the the animal ER .there should be one in your area.i would use plyers or something like that otherwise..i had a dog with them in her mouth and i took her to the vet.

You really should get the vet to do this for you.. Not only because you won't be the one hurting the dog, but because sometimes you need to give them an antibiotic after they have been hit by a porcupine.. Those quills are dirty and they can cause them a whole lot of trouble.. The vet can take them out and clean the dog up and then you won't need to worry that it wasn't done right.

the only way to get porcupine needles out is to pull them out. i would recommend going to the vet. they have probably had experience & that would make it less painful for u & the dogs

Vinegar will soften them enough to remove without hurting the dogs mightily, but I wouldn't chance that they haven't done damage to the soft tissue, working at the quills. I would cut the quills down so that it doesn't brush against other things and take the dogs to the vet.

Pliers are the only way to hold the quils, and a Vet will tell you on the phone how to do it yourself. Medication is also a home application he can tell you what to use.
