What is the best way to remove ticks from a pet with a lot of hair2007-11-25 2:52:06

PS please dont use a match, that's old school...dogs dont sit still for a very long time so you dont want to risk causing him injury.

Tweezers is a good way of removing ticks but make sure to get as far down as you can get it and remove everything make sure that the head is not still stuck because your puppy can get lime disease or any other diseases that ticks in your area may be carrying. Another thing that helps is a little bit of cooking oil it can suffocate the tick and you can pull it out with tweezers not to mention making it easier to pull the tick out. After you have pulled the tick out make sure to pop it in half because just smashing it in a piece of toilet paper or paper towel won't kill it then flush it down the toilet if you don't pinch it and throw it in the trash you could have that same tick back on your dog or even on you.

put a lot of vaseline around the tick so that it suffocates and then it will pop off. Or you could burn it off, but that wouldn't be such a good choice with the hair.

Never pluck them out with tweezers, I have three hunting dogs and I learned that the hard way. If you pluck them with tweezers their fangs will be stuck underneath your puppys' skin leading to a bad infection. What I have learned to be the best way (also recommended from my vet) is that you pull back all their hair away from the tick then light a match, blow it out, then right away stick it on the tick (as close to the ticks head as possible without burning your dog) and it will kill the tick leaving it to undo its fangs from your dogs skin and it will go away.

Dip a Q-tip in alcohol and rub it on the tick. It will usually make them fall off. Good luck!
