What is/how would one become a registered breeder- just curious2007-11-25 2:53:24

I have no intent nor the dogs to breed (mine's fixed, has no uterus) but after reading this question's answer (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?... ) the person asks "Are you a registered breeder?" What's a registered breeder? How does one become one? Are they certified thru AKC or something? Again, I don't want to be one, I just have never heard of a "registered breeder" before and was wondering how that worked.

Answers:

There is no such thing as a registered breeder. The dogs are registered but breeders are not although the breeder's name appears on the dog registration certificate. Breeders who have worked hard to maintain specific bloodlines will apply with the AKC to register their kennel name as a way of preventing others from using it in any form in the registered name of a dog. Otherwise, breeders are not registered.

In some communities, breeders must become registerd with their local animal control office. They will pay an annual fee, or tax, in order to exceed the community limits on the number of dogs owned or the spay/neuter laws. These fees vary widely from town to town.

a person that has 2 registered dogs and breeds them! both dogs have to be registered.
