Bull Mastiffs are more guardians then hunters. Have you thought of a Rhodisian Ridgeback?

Also..."old yeller" was a black mouth cur (if I remember correctly) And I think they are also used.

Okay, certain breeds were ORIGINALLY used to hunt boar, but in most breeds, that trait has dwindled out of their character and drive due to selective breeding. Most people didn't find any use in that, so they selectively bred dogs more for companions than hunting boar. Many of these dogs, like the Great Dane, are more family dogs than anything. Most Danes wouldn't hurt a fly now days! Golden Retrievers and Labs would NOT be a good choice. They're used to hunt duck, not large game. I'm sorry, I used to have a Lab, but those two breeds aren't the most couragous of animals. haha
