It is important to get it right. read books, talk to breeders, search the internet.

good luck!

It really depends on the dog's personality. The best thing to do is go to the pound or a rescue and get a young adult dog, as they usually are already trained and have had their temperment evaluated. If you just have to have a purbred for some reason, go to the American Kennel Club website and check out the breed standard on temperment for dog breeds that interest you. Guarding, working, independant, and things along that line will mean more work and/or interaction is needed from the owner and accordingly more experience is better. However there are plenty of dogs that won't conform to their breed standard so that is just a guideline. No matter what dog you get you better do your homework before getting it home, and you better expect to do some work getting the dog adjusted to you and your house rules.
I would say Pits, German Shepherds, Dobermans & Rottweilers since they are very intelligent, strong willed with tremendous strength & can be very headstrong or stubborn.
For a first time owner, you should probably stick with a smaller breed. Bigger dogs get to be overwhelming when the get to be over a year old and if you don't have much experience with dogs, it could drive you crazy trying to control them.
Alaskan Malamute (DIFFICULT to train but the best pet ever)
