They can all be good dogs but those are some strong headed dogs that can get difficult to train and what not. I would start with a small or medium size dog not large. Basset Hounds are pretty good.
For a first time owner, I would suggest you buy a breed book from the bookstore. Just about every breed available will be in there with size, average life span, temperment and personality traits. Do some research and make a list of your accomodations for a dog, such as, how long will you be gone during the day? What size yard do you have? Are you sports oriented or a couch potato? How involved do you want to get with training? This is a big step, as dogs live anywhere from 10-18 years. Once you match all this up, you should be able to get exactly the right breed. Then all you have to do is fall in love with one of them!
