Pet store pups come from breeders who do no health checks on the parents, who do no temperament checks on the parents. Very often, these pups come from horrid conditions (that the parents still exist in). Puppy mills, where dogs live in tiny cages with minimal contact with humans, where they live in their own feces, where diseases run rampant.

When a pup spends the first five weeks of its life living in feces, this pup is very hard to house break. When a pup spends the first five weeks with little to no contact with humans, this pup is often very shy...or very hostile to humans. When a pup is seperated from its siblings and mother before 8 weeks, they don't learn valuable lessons on social skills, like biting hurts.

As you are getting the dog for a child, you certainly want to get a nice dog, not one who will develop genetic diseases that will either cost a ton of money to correct, or will result in having to put the dog down. You want a dog who can be trusted to not be vicious.
