What makes a person a backyard breeder
You also have to do all the health checks necessary for your breed and all your breeding stock must have cleared those checks.
A back yard breeder doesn't know how to supervise a mating, doesn't know what pre-natal care a pregnant bit ch needs, doesn't know how to assist with whelping, and doesn't know how to look after a litter.
They also sell puppies to anybody with the money - they don't have questionnaires for prospective buyers, they don't ask the questions necessary to make sure their puppies will be going into suitable homes, they don't know how to match a puppy's temperament to the right buyer, they don't provide guarantees, and they don't take puppies back in the event that the buyer can't keep them.
A puppy mill has nothing to do with quantity, but quality. Puppy mills do not take care of their breeding animals and almost all puppies they sell are sick and ill-bred. The parents are malnourished and kept in cages with unsanitary living conditions. A backyard breeder is someone who does it as a hobby and not a professional breeder. You can be a professional breeder and not show your animals as well as you can be a backyard breeder and show your animals.
Backyard breeders typically produce a small amount of litters and are generally looked down upon by professionals because they tend to not breed responsibly, and tend to avoid the genetic testing that a pro breeder would typically do.
