What makes a person a backyard breeder2007-11-25 2:53:32

Purchasing dogs, especially those claimed to be purebred, from a pet store is strongly discouraged by reputable breeders and animal shelters. While many pet stores claim to purchase dogs from "local breeders" instead of puppy mills, this is often untrue or is a difference in name only, as reputable breeders generally do not sell animals to pet stores. The phrase "local breeder" may also refer to backyard breeders.

The U.S. state of Kansas has enacted a law to protect puppy mill owners by making it a felony to photograph a puppy mills and facilities."

A backyard breeder is someone who decides to breed their dog/dogs because they think it might be fun, they think they'll make lots of money, they want their kids to experience the "miracle of birth," or they want to have another dog with the same personality as their current pet. They may also just have an unaltered animal that gets pregnant or gets another dog pregnant. These are people that do not take genetics, breed standards, temperament, etc. into account. They don't have their animals screened for health problems. They also, usually, don't think beyond having puppies and selling them. They don't know about the birthing process or how to take care of the puppies.

I could go on & on but I think I'll stop there.

a backyard breed can care for the quility of the puppies as well as a person who has a breeding kennel. they will get there puppies tested as well a big breeding kennel. i raised two litters of shelties and one litter of cardigan welsh corgis. i made sure that my puppies were healthy.
As I'm sure you're aware, the term "backyard breeder" is meant to be derogatory. What makes someone a backyard breeder? Breeding for profit is one criteria. A backyard breeder often breeds to make money selling puppies. A second criteria is lack of research or health testing of the dogs being mated. There's much more to breeding sound dogs with good personalities than simply putting two dogs together. Perhaps you think you have wonderful dogs, but even the most accomplished show kennels can become "kennel blind," thinking that their dogs are better than all others and therefore, that they don't have to put them to the test any longer. Many people don't understand that the purpose of a conformation show, such as Westminster, is to judge the worthiness of the dogs as breeding stock. Every person that takes their dog into the show ring thinks that he or she has the best dog there. If they didn't, they wouldn't bother to be there and spend all of the time and money it takes to show. The judge is the hopefully impartial expert whose job it is to determine which of the dogs he or she is seeing and feeling is truly the best in the ring that day. Now, if people who make a living showing dogs (handlers) can't guarantee that the dog they take into the ring is going to be considered the best example of the breed, how do you think a person who hasn't made dogs his or her lifelong passion can know, with all certainty, that his or her dog is the best example of the breed?
