The bottom line is that there is no shortage of puppies for people to buy. While it might be a business or a hobby to some people to breed them without striving to improve the breed as a whole, the reality is that each of those puppies that is brought in the world through the efforts and permission of people is a living, breathing, feeling being. They don't ask to be born and in today's world, dogs are totally dependent upon humans for their wellbeing. Truth is that a lot of the dogs that end up in pounds or rescue come from backyard breeders. And even if that were not true, the number of dogs that need homes is proof enough that we don't need any more people breeding dogs -- especially as a casual hobby.

To me a backyard breeder refers to people who breed dogs, but are ignorant of selective breeding goals and techniques, and are not familiar with the breed standard of their chosen breed of dog. The usually don't do genetic screening or Co-efficent of Inbreeding calculations. The puppies they produce may have genetic disorders or illnesses, but will often try to sell before they become evident to buyers. They rarely screen potential buyers or inform them on breeds whose care and maintenance may be inappropriate for their lifestyle.
