A "back yard breeder" is normaly a person who purchased a male and female pup and just produces litters, there's no papers for the pups: you can see ads stating : "AKC CHAMPION LINES; no papers .. well the person bought the dogs for pet and cannot get papers on the pup because it's a spay/neutr contract, and yes they have the parents pedigrees but your dog will NEVER be registered.

Mix breeds or so called "designer dogs" just make me sick to my stomach, but folk that buy them are worst than the people that breed them.....

Puppy Mills, I guess you are hooked up on showing in some way.... puppy mills are places where a male and female dog are placed in a small crate and their only job is to reproduce. If breedings are not succesfull the dogs are killed and replaced by better breeders. Dogs purchased at pet stores come directly from puppy mills, no breeder will place a pup in a store or sell it through a dog third party.

If all new potential puppy owners would boycot pet stores rather then talking bad about breeders, we could get those people out of business.

A backyard breeder has a few litters a year "to make some money". They tend to just get dogs from wherever, saying "well, I got this lab from the petstore and this one from a newspaper add, and they both have papers, so I should breed them"

You don't have to show dogs, but breeding just for the fun of it, without knowing what you are doing, isn't a good idea. At least know what is good and bad about the dogs (from a show standpoint) and try to find a good match for it depending on those qualities.

Assistance dogs are different, slightly. My good friend breeds Australian Shepherds, and she regularly donates puppies to be trained as service dogs, but she also shows her dogs and competes in agility.
