What natural cures are there to help a dog produce red blood cells2007-11-25 2:53:02

My female dog almost died because her body had stopped producing red blood cells, so they gave her a transfusion & put her on alot of dangerous meds. She is doing better, but the meds are making her weaker before they make her stronger. That doesn't make any sense to me. The vet thinks it was caused by an insect bite, but she was fine untill we took her there to be neutered & now she has this problem.

The treatment for anemia depends upon why it has happened. There are several different reasons for it to develop.

What you described sounds like what goes on with people (I work in human medicine) called hemolytic anemia, which can happen after something an insect bite (among other things) where the body's immune system destroys its red blood cells. In people, this is usually treated by steroids, starting at a high dose and gradually reducing this until the person no longer needs the medication. I'd imagine it's the same way for dogs. I would go with your vet's recommendation for this even if it's a tough treatment. If she is on steroids, DO NOT stop her on your own. They have to be tapered slowly or she will get worse again.

She didn't have any internal bleeding after her surgery, did she? If that is why she needed the transfusion, that would be a different type of anemia with a different treatment.

She will naturally regain cells...a proper diet with vitamin K (avoid menadione or vitamin K3) will help, probably iron, too.
