What should I do about my disobidient sheltie
Don't walk your dog off lead, and don't give your dog any commands if you can't or won't reinforce them.
Your dog doesn't need training as much as you do. Enroll in a good positive reinforcement obedience class, and read "The Culture Clash" by Jean Donaldson.
First and formost if the dog is not reliable of leash do not let him of. If I were you i would enter him in a local obedience class in you area. This is a side note but spanking him for going home was a bad bad bad idea I understand that you were mad and you wanted to make an inpression on the dog, but all it did was tell the dog if you get away from me and go to your home I will beat you. Second the dog should not be on the couch it gives him the Idea that he an equal with the people in the house and he is not he should be a follower he should be on the ground. Remember patience and concistincy are the two best tools there are in dog training. If you keep your cool and dont let youe frustrations get the best of you you can help this dog be right. I hope you get some help and I hopr thing work out.
When you say that you dog is no danger and in the paragraph before said that it got in to a fight with a dog on the other dogs property will that just sounds Ignorant if you naibor decided tohe could have you dog taken form you and put down for being agressive on there proprety. So your dog may not be a danger to others but becaus of the lack of training he could be taken away from you please do not fool your self and say that I live in the country so my dog dose not need to be obediant that is a big steming pile of BS. do the right thing put on a collar and leash when you take the dog for a walk and dont get mad when people point out the obvious that it is your problem not the dogs.
Stop blaming your dog for your own inadequate training. Your dog got into a fight because *you* didn't train him well enough. It really annoys me when people blame their dogs, when in fact, YOU have not trained your dog well enough. Your dog then goes throught the trauma of a fight..goes home...and then YOU lay into him. If a dog "chooses" not to listen, it's because you are not rewarding what he *does* do high enough. Dogs don't do a 10 minute down because they like to stay still..they do it because they've been trained to understand that after the 10 minutes, they are going to get a high reward. With my dog, this is sodding off away from the ring and throwing her favourite ball three or four times. OR, he listens but does not understand what you want..did you consider that? Personally, I wouldn't want to come to someone who gets so mad at me, they'll raise their hand to me. Training a dog is a mutual relationship. You need to earn some respect from your dog. Start working on it. Reward good behaviour. Make sure the behaviour you ask for is understood. Stop smacking your dog because *you* are mad at your own inadequacies.
I will emphasize what everyone else said. DO NOT ever hit a dog if they are disobedient. They have no clue why you are doing that. If your dog is good, s/he receives a reward. If s/he is bad, then it's called the absence of a reward. NOT punishment.
And don't let him off of the leash if you haven't trained him yet! You need to train him first, go and borrow books at the library. for goodness sake you need some knowledge before owning a pet.
