What should I do about my dogs Diarreah and Vomiting
I have a 5 month old small puppy. We just moved and while we were packing he looked fine and acted fine. We packed and drove 12 hours straight. He sat on the passenger's lap and slept here and there, but was not wild in the car. At about 11 hours and 50 minutes, he started whining and then threw up a little bit. We got to our destination and he met two other dogs and acted VERY normal and excited to see them. But from there on out, he has had multiple spells of diarreah. He has also thrown up once in his crate over night. It is now morning, and he has very loose stools, but still plays and acts excited.
I am very concerned! What are some things that I can do to help him. I know the vet is a serious option, but we do not have one here. Is he just nervous? What can I give him?
Answers:You need to watch him but I wouldn't panic just yet.
Can you take his temperature. Call the vet office they will talk you through it. If he has a fever you may want to take him in.
Well you can start by cleaning it up
Give him nothing - keep him warm, dry, and isolated from any excitement and let him rest. Do not feed him, but encourage him to drink water often. If the diarrhea and vomiting were caused by the car ride, then after half a day or so of rest he should be resolved. If he continues to vomit, please find a veterinarian to examine him.
I would give him a day and if he's not better, I would take him to the doctor. He may have gotten car sick or it could have been the excitement of the trip.
Call a vet - as you said, that's a serious option. A small animal can become dehydrated very quickly having both diahrrea and vomiting. Grab the checkbook and call one.
I would get your puppy to the vet asap. Those are possible signs of PARVO. It is a deadly illness that will be very rough on him. Especially if he has not been vaccinated fully.
you can start by giving him boiled chicken and rice or chicken broth and rice but water the chicken broth down or it will be too salty. this will be easy on his tummy. hes prolly just excited about being somewhere new and a little nervous. my cat almost died when i moved and he ended up beiing fine after about a week. try not to have him around too much excitement and let him get used to where he is.
You should know that whenever you upset a puppy's environment, diarrhea can occur. As well as when you change food or just being nervous. My guess is CAR SICKNESS. That's a long time to be in a car for a 5 mo old pup. Take him off his feed for 12 hours or so, water ONLY! Then introduce him to his feed again but only a little at a time 1/4 cup -1/2 cup...a couple times a day until he has solid stools. Another thing, might be an intestinal infection/worms, etc..if it persists take him to a vet and have him looked at. A pup that young can get dehydrated quickly so make sure he is drinking. Good luck.
It sounds like he has a up set stomach from the car ride and the new move. I dont think it is Parvo at all. You can just give him lots of water for today and some cooked rice with chicken. Tomorrow if he is still having a bit of the runs you can find a vet but I truly think he will be fine. Moving is a big thing for pups and for you too. It will take him a while to just get used to everything new.
Well he probably vomited because he ate something that disagreed with his stomach and the car ride could have very well affected the digestion of his food. My puppy still has loose stool because of how young she is, we try to give her some fiber treats to help with this but it is only natural. He is also in a new place/home and we wouldn't think but this is a traumatic experience for a puppy. When we moved apartments within one week of getting the puppy she did the same thing. Do not worry this is normal, but better to get your pup checked out by a vet also just to be safe.
He might just be nervous about his new place. Regardless, when a puppy has stomach problems, the typical method is to have him fast for 12 hours (make sure you have fresh water available, though) and then give him a bland meal of white rice, cottage cheese, and a little plain, skinless chicken. You can also give him an Imodium AD (one tablet) if you still see loose stools. As far as the vomiting goes, I think if that is accompanied by a loss of energy, then a vet visit is in order, but since he's still energetic, I'd just keep an eye on him, and if it looks like he takes a turn for the worse, get him to a vet.
