What should I do

Most of these rescues need foster homes to take care of dogs,so they can rescue another from a high-kill shelter> http://search.petfinder.com/search/searc...
Just put in your own zip code to find one near you that needs your help..Click on the shelter name in the left column.
It is not a good idea to get a dog right now. Shelters adopt out with the expectation that you will keep that dog FOR LIFE. It is highly irresponsibly on your parents' part to recommend you getting a dog for only a year and then giving it away.
As sad as it is, I recommend you NOT adopting a dog at all. Why don't you try volunteering at an animal shelter? You can work with the dogs that come into the system and experience the joy of helping them find forever homes. You could also look into summer work at a kennel or a vet's office.
A lot of us had to go through college dog-less (myself included) but volunteering made it a lot easier.
Simple. Don't get one. It's just plain cruel to adopt a dog for a year and a half then give the dog away again. Wait until you are out of college and out of your parents home. If your parents do not want to care for the dog while you're at college, you might as well forget getting a dog while you're in college.
you obviously cant take care of it when you leave, so dont get one. it would be irresponsible.
