What should a neutered dog look like2007-11-25 2:53:05

I have a male lab that just got neutered a week and a half ago. He still has his stitches on. I noticed that there looks like there is still 1 testicle that hasn't been removed. I called the vet and they said it was just swollen and that both testicles have been removed. I felt the testicle and there was still something in it. Is it normal to still feel a sack or testicle after he's been neutered or is there supposed to be nothing at all?

It is swollen. It's going to take a couple weeks. If he's an older dog it takes a while for the loose skin to tighten up.

They are going to have the sac for a while, it takes a few months to shrink. Also it is common to have some swelling in the area, if the testes are not fully descended the vet may have had to go fishing for them, which would have caused additional trauma, bruising and swelling in the area. A blood clot could have settled in there as well.

Should almost be time to have the stitches removed, the vet can double check everything and reassure you then.

I am sure your vet can count to two, otherwise s/he would not have made it out of veterinary school...

There can be some swelling, and also a flap of loose skin for a while. I would bring him in for a follow up, if the swelling is large enough to feel like another testicle, it could need to be treated with antibiotics or anti-inflammatories.

All my boy dogs came back looking like they had had surgery, but the sacs were just a bit deflated. In a week or so, the sacs were flat against the muscle -- as if there had never been anything there to start with.
