What should i do about my whippet2007-11-25 2:53:06

I live in a appartment ( I know someone is going to tell me i shouldnt have gotten a whippet if i live in an appartment, save your breath) but anyway i want to let him run, but im worried he wont come back to me, because i just got him and im not sure he knows his name, or that he needs to come to me when i call! obviously i cant run as fast as him so running with him is not a option

I would like to enroll him in some activities for greyhounds and whippets, but i just would like to let him run now.

what should i do, how would i test him to see if he would come back... help

Answers:

Sadly they are a breed that is not well suited to going off lead not in a fenced area. One deer, squirrel or even a blowing bit of paper & zing off they go to give chase - and they don't look both ways when they get to the street and put it this way-- I saw the winner of the 2002 national run hard as he could after a fake rabbit with his owner behind shreaking his name (dog never heard her).

As for activities: www.asfa.org

www.whippetracing.org

also check out lure coursing on the www.akc.org s

many clubs have practices if you contact them

warning: lure coursing is open to registered and ILP (rescue) whippets with no breed DQ's

Racing is open to registered whippets only but some races are open to dogs with breed DQ.
