What size crate should I put my toy poodle puppy in, while Im at work for 4 1/2 hours2007-11-25 2:53:10

I have already bought the cage type of crate (with the manual divider that one can install, to make it smaller) from Petco. I bought the size that's recommended for toy poodles. However, I'm wondering if it's too small & cruel to expect the 11 week old to stay in there, trying to hold it's potty, while I'm at work 4 1/2 hours. I did put the divider in it, so he'll have enough room to stand up, walk a few steps and then lay back down. Let me know your thoughts on this please.

don't listen to them...u are doing right! When my pug was a pup he could hold it for up to 8 hours, the trick is to give a little food and water in the morning..let the puppy out to go potty, then put him in the crate..he will be fine! They naturally want to keep their space clean so it is good to train them young so that your pup won't think he can mark his territory where ever he wants...

No it is not cruel

He just needs enough room to be able to stand turn and lay comfortably, too much room he will be able to mess and get away from the mess. Dogs do not mess where they sleep.

11 weeks is too young. As a rough rule, a dog can "hold it" one hore for each month of age. So your 11 week old can only be expected to hold it for 2 hours.

Consider setting up a slightly larger area with a place allowing the dog to go potty. An exercise pen about 2 ft high and 4-6 ft around. Set up wee-pads on one side and a clean resting and eating area on the other.
