I live in Northern Minnesota and i really want a beagle, but my dad doesnt want an inside dog? Can they survive Minnesota's long cold winters?

I live in the Canadian Prairies where our whether is similar to Minnesota's, and I have a Beagle. Waaayyy too cold for a beagle to live outside, even with its own dog house.

If your dog is to live outside year-round, day and night, you should only consider the nordic breeds with a heavy double coat, and still they would need at least a doghouse.

Wait until you move out to get your beagle. They are lovely, fun little dogs. Too much fun to leave them outside!

If your dad doesn't want a dog maybe you should listen to him it can get too cold for dogs out side and they do need to come inside when it is freezing out.

I have had two beagles and while they are hardy little dogs...I would never leave it outside especially in Minnesota.

They really like to be around people and are a great family dog. No dog should be left outside in frigid cold winters like Minnesota has.

First of all, I'll say it again, dogs are PACK animals and NO dog should be left outside all the time. A beagle has hair, not fur so if it's too cold for you, it's too cold for the dog. Same with heat. Until your dad gets educated about dogs, why not stick with a hamster?

Not without shelter. Beagles are are a short hair breed and will need help to withstand the cold. An insulated dog house with a raised floor (to keep him off the ground) that is big enough for him to turn around in will be adequate (if you're handy, build one and save $$). Inside put a wool blanket or 2 for bedding. If you can't put it in the garage during the winter then you should invest in a heated dog bed and heated water bowl so his drinking water won't freeze.

Then again, it might be easier to get a breed that is more suitable for that kind of weather.

NO.. Commonsense is my source.. They have a short coat.. Dogs don't belong outside at all for any length of time in cold winters.
