What to do with my 3-year-old Cairn Terrier

What to do with my 3-year-old Cairn Terrier2007-11-25 2:53:16

My dog bites and growls at my wife - has caused bleeding at times. We are expecting our first child in November, and are afraid that he could do that to the kid. A "dog therapist" met with the dog over the weekend and feels the only 2 options are to re-home or euthanize.

I personally don't want to get rid of him, but I don't have a choice if I want to stay married. We know that the no-kill animal shelters aren't that great because they eventually run out of room or lack enough resources to properly care for him.

We are sure that we would be able to give him to another family since he bites if he is disturbed.

There are supposedly facilities that will "house" your dog as long as you continue to pay for all fees - food, vet, etc. Does anyone know of any good places? I only want the best for him.

Thanks!

Try a breed-specific rescue and be honest about his faults. They will work with him, evaluate him and hopefully rehabilitate him.

Re: rawhides - don't bring them into the house, that's easy enough.

Boarding him for the rest of his life isn't a humane idea..

Check for Cairn Terrier rescue in your area.. They will work with the dog and correct those things that you have allowed to happen.

If it was me, I would work with the dog, but If I were you, I would bring in a better qualified trainer and see what he says.. Rehome or euthanize.. Has the dog killed anyone? What kind of person is your wife.. Very soft and afraid to say NO? If yeah then rehome.. Euthanizing a dog for problems you have created isn't fair.. Finding someone to fix those problems is fair.

well,in my state you can send it to Doggie Camp at Pets smart.check with your local Pets Smart.
Does your dog only bite your wife and not you? If so it sounds like an issue of dominance. Your dog has decided that he is the boss and that you are his. He is biting your wife because thats his way of showing her that he's in control of her. You need to find a way of showing your dog that he is not the one in control, you are. I know you said you already met with a "dog therapist" but if they told you there was nothing to do but rehome or euthanize I'd consider finding a more experienced dog trainer that has delt with issues like this before.
