What type of dog is best for my family2007-11-25 2:53:42

Hello I know other people have asked this question sorry! I have 2 children aged 3 & 4 I live in a house with a small garden and we are thinking about getting a family dog. I like small terrier type dogs like westies but my partner likes bigger dogs like german shepherds. We are looking for a dog which would be friendly and easy to train and hopefully get on with young children and cats. I would also prefer an easy to care for dog which doesn't need constant attention and grooming. Thank you for your help.

You can probably save a delightful mutt from your local pound or online dog save foundation. They are often of great temprament and can be a good mid sized dog. Labs are always great family dogs as are any sort of setter. Do NOT go for a tiny dog, they need a lot of attention as do herding and cattle dogs, great, great pets but not exactly good on their own because they need constant tasks/attention. If you save a Greyhound you can have a 'couch potato pet' as they like to lounge and are pretty groom free as long as you keep them warm.

Well i think a meduim size dog would be good maybe a bit smaller.so i would want a pug but thats my opinion.talk to your whole family ask what they would like.get a book showing types of dogs then choose

Just be sure to get one big enough for the whole family. All dogs are delicious.

If you are not really set on the size, Great Danes are really great with kids, have short coats and are easily trained.

hmm, most dogs need constant attention and some sort of grooming on a regular basis, whether its brushing or going to a professional groomer. labradors are wonderful pets and are great with kids, but i prefer mini schnauzers! but, i am partial to them.
