What I personally do is sleep in a sleeping bag beside the pup's crate. As soon as I hear it moving about, I'm out like a shot, and take pup outside....crate is right beside the outside door. Don't always get there in time, but it works in the end. The whining, as someone said, was probably just poor puppy getting used to being on it's own away from the litter.nothing to do with needing out. Pup's eliminate *as soon as* they wake up....hence you need to be tuned in to your pup waking up. I just seem to cat-nap throught the night, and take the pup out whenever I hear it. Also, someone else mentioned as well that the crate might be too big....room for the pup to eliminate, and then go back to bed! Put a divider in if you can, so that pup wakes up and doesn't want to dirty on her bed.

Hope this has helped. It will take time, especially if the breeder has not toilet trained at all. When I bred, my pups were all toilet trained at six weeks when they were ready to go to their new homes.

PS. You say you are taking her out every 1/2 hour during the day. That sounds good...BUT you are not teaching her to ask to go out..nor can *you* see when she needs out. Does that make sense? I would <for example> take her out in the morning, feed her, take her out again, and then put her in her crate to sleep. Sit near her..allow yourself only toilet breaks! <bg> and wait until she wakes up. Watch her, and observe her and listen to her. Does she make a noise as she wakes up....a little yawning noise, a little mew, does she start to scrabble around? Observe in the daytime, and use that observation for night-time...otherwise you're just guessing..and she's not learning that waking up means we go straight outside..so she won't even start to try and wake you with little noises. Hope all that makes sense!!!!
