What was the big idea changing the conformation of the German shepherd so that the hindquarters slop2007-11-25 2:53:46Answers:

To supposedly give it a longer gait, reach. All it has done is crippled a once outstanding working dog. The Noble German Shepherd, once THE epitomy of working dogs is now a sad remnant of that great animal that was. Breeders have bred most working capacity out of the dog in favor of the show ring because that's where the big money is. The poor dogs look pathetic and have lost respect with most working dog enthusiast all over the world.

For the same reason people have ruined all sorts of perfectly good animals -- for a "look." Whenever you start breeding for look instead of function you get crap.
Though the response here are correct, you can still find some German Shepherds without the slope. The first link below shows some great examples of what is called the Germline Show dogs. They have a slight slope that is used in germany for the Seiger competition. Below is a link I was able to find of a working line German Import and he is beautiful. I also include a link to my boy who is without a doubt a German Bloodline
