What were they bred for
I am just curious as to what chow chows were originally bred for? I know about most other breeds, but I don't know this one. This is really annoying me that I can't think of this. Any help would be appreciatd, but I ask that you please list your source so I know what u are saying is not just hearsay or opinions. Thank you very much!
Answers:From the AKC Standard:
"General Appearance 鈥?Characteristics 鈥?An ancient breed of northern Chinese origin, this all-purpose dog of China was used for hunting, herding, pulling and protection of the home. While primarily a companion today, his working origin must always be remembered when assessing true Chow type."
From the Parent Club's website:
HISTORY
The Chow Chow, often simply called the Chow, is one of the oldest breeds. His exact history is lost in the China of antiquity. Some historians record that the Tarters invaded China a thousand years before Christ and brought back to the West some middle-sized dogs that looked like "lions" with blue-black tongues. The Chow as it is known today is easily recognizable in pottery and sculptures of the Chinese Han Dynasty (206 B.C. to 22 A.D.); other artifacts indicate that he was even a much older breed and that he may have come originally from the Arctic Circle, migrating to Mongolia, Siberia and China. Some scholars claim that the Chow was the original ancestor of the Samoyed, the Norwegian Elkhound, the Pomeranian and the Keeshond. In more recent times, that is, in the T'ang Dynasty (7th Century A.D.), it is reported that one Chinese emperor kept something like 2,500 of these "Chow Dogs" as hunting and sporting animals to accompany his ten thousand hunters! Admired by emperors as well as by Western royalty, used by Chinese peasants for food and clothing,. and adopted as a "favorite" of the movie star set in Hollywood in the 1920's, the Chow Chow has had a dramatic history.
Mainly fighting and sometimes, unfortunately food. They are a Japanese breed and were bred for fighting purposes and later bred to be companion animals after fighting was illegal. They still retain much of their fighting instincts and should not be owned by a first time owner.
Here is a link for you to read all about chow chows, personnally, I can not stand the evil demon dogs. http://www.barkbytes.com/history/chow.ht...
From China. Used for hunting, cart pulling and boat guard.
According to Eyewitness Handbook: Dogs, the Chow was originally bred in China (it says origins 100s) and was used for cart pulling, guard dog, its fur was a "valuable commodity." and the flesh was used for human consumption. I've heard good and bad things about Chows. One of the vets where I take my dog says that they would face a pit bull over a Chow any day, but my neighbors have a Chow whom they love. Good luck with whatever you choose!
Its not necessarily the breed of dog because your poodles, terries, ur schnauzers were all bred for hunting and fight it is all in how you raise them.
