When someone says their lab is English type..it is has a blocky build, a square head, wide chest, coarse coat, which is the AKC standard. An American lab is not an AKC confirmation lab, it is lanky, taller, narrow head, shorter coat. both body types can appear in the same litter of puppies with same parents. People get mixed up tho, and reverse the descriptions, so you need to ask the breeder or seller, what the term means to them. Still another term used is Field Lab, which is also the English blocky type. Personality wise...pretty much the same, both types get along with people, friendly, quick to learn games, especially retreiving games, likes to get wet, natural swimmer, as adult they are great with kids.

A labrador? There are very little discernable difference between american, english or field labradors. The only real differences between them come from the show conformation allowings, american comformation is a bit more lenient than english, and most american labs have been cross bred back to english.

Check out the AKC website for breed standards and pictures. The English laborador is a heavier-boned, rougher coated dog, in general. The American laborador has been bred as a house pet...and has a more refined look about it.

They will look similar, but their personalities are VERY different. While both are affectionate, the English lad is much smaller, and easier to train. Generally they have a calmer temperment than their American counterparts. The American Lab usually has a lot more energy, and requires more training and excersise. Good Luck!

There is only a difference in their looks and not so much in temperments. I had no idea in the difference until I got into Labs and started visiting breeders. The English type Lab is heavier, blockier head, stockier and they are the ones you will see in the confirmation ring. The American type/style is leaner, they have a longer slightly narrow face, longer legs ,and they are used more for the field trials/hunting. Regardless they are both Labs it is just the look or type. I have had breeders tell me the American Labs can be more hyper than the English only because of the stronger desire to hunt.

American labs are definately taller, slender body build, narrow face. They are seen as hunting dogs for the most part. The English labs are blocky head, stocky body build, and shorter. They are the ones you see in AKC shows. They are definately the better looking labs, my own opinion. I myself own a chocolate male who is English and I own a yellow female who is American. We use the American for our hunter and the English is our show dog and breeder.
