What will contractions look like2007-11-25 2:53:47

My female dog will reach 63 days of gestation tomorrow. 3 days ago she started having discharge and last night she started producing milk. She also began nesting and was very restless all throughout the night last night. About 3 hours ago she looked like she was shaking, particularly her stomach, which I thought was a contraction, but she hasn't done this since then. Will I be able to see her contractions? This is her first litter, so I'm scared I might miss something and need to contact a vet. Do most dogs wait until night when it is quiet to have their litter?

Answers:

Most likely you wont see her contractions. You will however see her panting a lot. If her labor lasts longer then 5 hours without a pup, or she is pushing and pushing for longer then 1 hour its time to contact a vet. More pups are born at night then there are during the day just like in the wild. This is done so that they can give birth and clean up before the morning when they are moving. So it is possible for her to have them tonight. Keep an eye on her and enjoy the birth of your new puppies. Good Luck

my dog had puppis at midnight and no not at night ur dog will probably have them today

good luck with the pup

ps-what kind are they???:)

its hard to tell when a dog is having contraction but when she starts trying to find cramped, hidden places to nest then she 's very close to giving birth. its best not to disturb her to much but make sure you keep an eye on her just in case.
If you have any doubts, call the Vet right away. Sometimes they do try to wait, but she probably will let you be there to help her. Is she in her whelping box now? She will also look at the birth canal a lot,and lick herself as the pups are born. It is a wonderful experience to witness. Good luck!
Like humans, dogs can't choose when to have their babies; it just happens. Rather than trying to see the contractions, you should try to feel them. Place your hand on your dog's tummy. If it feels very rigid and hard, she is probably having a contraction. So far, it sounds like everything is going all right, but you need to watch carefully. If another 8-10 hours go by with no babies, you should call a vet to make sure things are going all right. Depending on the breed of dog, she may need help delivering. Small breeds and breeds with flat faces (buldogs, boxers, pugs, etc) often need c-sections to give birth. Just stay with her and make her as comfortable as possible. Don't force her to eat, but give her as much water as she wants. The more time you spend with her, the more able you will be to see changes in her behavior and body that indicate coming birth.
