What will happend to my aunts dog that recently lost his eye2007-11-25 2:53:48

My aunt has two dogs, one a wolf hybrid and the other a pug mixed with another breed. He looks like a red pug though. In February the two dogs chased after a porcipine at night. In the morning the wold hybrid came back, but Wallie (the other dog) didn't come back. It was really cold out too, like -20 to -30 and there wasn't any hope, the wolf hybrid was infested with needles and he was sedated just to take them out and was sad Wallie was gone. They looked for him for 2 days but to no prevail. Finally a week later, he got found 5 miles away in a barn taking up another dogs vet. It was a mircle he survived. He lost a lot of weight, and he had a needle stuck into his eye, and his eye got infected. He got all the meds, and he is getting better now. His eye is almost completely gone, its just greenish and there is a crust all around and a green fluid comes out and both dogs lick it off. The infection was gone, but now its back. Will Wallie be ok? What can be done? Any experiances or advice?

Answers:

If the infection has came back, then he needs to go back to the vet to be put on stronger (or different) medication. He may need to have the eye surgically removed, which is where the vet removes the eyeball and then sews the eyelid shut. Dogs usually do fine with just one eye. He may bump into stuff for a while, but he should be back to normal in a few weeks.

keep taking him to the vet. it may cost money, but better safe than sorry if you love your dogs.

It sounds like the eyeball will have to be removed surgically if it is not just infected. He definitely needs to see the vet NOW either way. I am a licensed vet tech, and I've seen many animals over the years with only one eye. They do wonderful, and Wallie can still live a great life! Our doctor removed an eye on a cat about two weeks ago, and he is doing wonderful. Good luck!
