What would be a really good puppy for a handicapped person2007-11-25 2:54:25

I think I want a puppy, I want one that will stay small, that is of a healthy breed, like I know some dogs are more prone to illnesses than others. I live on a very small fixed income. I can take care of a dog but not a lot of vet bills. I also want a smart dog, I don't mind brushing or combing. What do you think?

I think a companion dog would be a great idea! There is nothing more comforting than a loyal dog curled up beside you. Based on your description of your condition, you probably will want to stay away from the really hyper and jumpy types. A lot of the smaller breeds want to always be in your lap, so you end up getting jumped on alot. Possibly a good breed to consider is a Shetland Sheep Dog. They are intensely loyal, brave and don't actually require as much exercise as you may think. The sheltie personality can be a little reclusive, which makes them more adaptable to a quiet, one-person lifestyle. They are also extremely smart and can learn commands quickly. They don't usually have any potty training issues, either. My first sheltie was only 17 pounds, and she was a little large for a miniature. If you have access to the internet, you could look up local breeders, who could place an animal with you based on its personality traits.

maybe a yorkie or a poodle...i know lots of people who have pomeranians and pugs...also papilions.
pomeranian
Handicapped how??? I suggest a smallish- mixed breed.Animal shelters usually have a pretty good price reduction for seniors/handicapped/(my mom's dog was free because a local senios group was sponsoring adoptions for the elderly) .Cockers make a nice mix,as do poodles, and chihuahuas.
pameranians, yorkies, terriers(if you don't a little jumpiness), or poodles.
Most terriers stay pretty small and stay quite healthy. Really, there are a lot of small breeds that could work for you, alot of your decision will be based on the personality of the dog in question. Any puppy you get will require a lot of love, attention and training, so make sure you are ready for it. Many small dogs also routinely live for 12-15 years, so this is also a long term committment!!
a jack russle terrier would be a good match they are very smart have alot of spunk and live fairly healthy lives.but as most small dogs they can have a napolian complex but its not bad at all.
You don't mention the type of handicap, but it could make a large difference in the type of puppy that you get. If your handicap causes breathing problems, you'll want one of the breeds that are less likely to cause allergic reactions, such as poodles (as surprising as this may seem). If your handicap makes it more difficult to get around, a Jack Russell terrior or one of the more active breeds is definitely not for you.
