What would make a 9week old choc lab grunt when he isnt doing anything
Sometimes when we take him out and have to carry him down the steps to the yard he grunts while we hold him. Any ideas?

That is a natural instinct for puppies. It goes back to wolf pack behavior. It is a submissive vocalization just as growling is a dominant vocalization. No worries, he's just being a puppy.
