what about dalmatians? not into small dogs

If you can handle the shedding labs or golden retrievers make excellent family dogs. They have enough energy to keep your kids busy and they learn very quickly. If you get a puppy, by the time they get big enough to knock over your kids they won't be jumping. They adjust very well to little ones. You won't ever have to worry about your kids with them. I let my 4 and 5 year old cousins play with my lab with no adult supervision for hours and he just lets them do what ever and he was not raised with kids at all.

I have not had any good expirience with Dalmations, and I have known several. With children that young I would consider a small dog so that if the dog jumps up it wouldn't knock your kids over!

dalmations are great family dogs. however, they arent quite as intelligent as other breeds and so can be harder to train (that DOESNT mean they cant be trained or that all dalmations are dumb!)... they are also a little bit more of a handful when it comes to personality - they can be quite hyperactive and boisterous.. if you know how to train a dog and have plenty of time to spend on the pup, then id say go for it.
