We moved from Indiana to Tennessee three years ago with two great danes, two dachshunds a cat and a parakeet, moving company moved us, we drove our two mini vans, my husband took the male great dane, I took the female dane, and the two dachshunds in a crate and the cat in a pet taxi and the parakeets rode in the passenger seat with me plus the other odds and ends that were left to move, the dogs traveled fine with no tranquelizers, we stopped once so they could all pottie and they were none worse for the wear and tear, it was about a 10 hour drive..just take water and let your dog take a drink when you take a pottie and stretch break for yourself, limit the food incase your dog is prone to car sickness, our dogs slept most of the way down.

Well if you are flying.then just get a good dog carrier and let it be at that.if the dog cries all the way...do not worry about it..some airlines may even have tips for you.sedatives are NOT recommended for flying...they lower the body temperature and the cargo area is usually not well temperature controlled.your dog could go into hypothermia.

If driving...it depends on how much your dog likes the car..if they like it...then there should be no problem...stop and take brakes if your dog gets excited then wait till the settle down for awhile defore you feed them.plus only give small meals and water.do not worry to much if your dog does not eat very much on the trip.. a dog can go many days without eating and it will not harm them...unlike cats.

if they hate the car.call your vet, a sedative may be needed to help you and him get through it.

...how ever you do, you should call your vet for suggestions and also map out the trip, where you can stop and possibly emergency vets along the way.plus have your dogs medical records with you just in case.
