Whats an easier way to give an IM injection to a dog2007-11-25 2:53:51

My princess Jubilee (11 months) must receive Adequan injections for hip dysplacia. She's been diagnosed and receiving the shots for months- but each time it gets more and more unbearable for all of us. She yelps like we're killing her and starts shaking. She knows when it's coming and even before the needle goes in starts to panic.

adequan injections can be given under the skin. my dog gets them twice a month. if your current vet wont show you how, go to one who will. adequan injections do not have to be given im!!!

Maybe her Vet could prescribe a light sedative for her to take before the big shot? It wouldn't hurt to ask.

Are you doing the injection in the same place each time? if so that's probably why she is getting so upset. You need to mover around so as the skin does not become hard and painful for her.

I would also recommend giving her a treat after each shot. One that she only gets with them and one that is something she would go crazy to get. Sadly hip dysplacia is only going to make her hips more and more sore each week. I am not sure why your vet didn't recommend putting her down since there is no cure for this and it never goes away. I am guessing she has a mild case of it. You should probably do more research on how bad the vet thinks it will get and see if you are just making her suffer for no reason. Good luck.

All I can offer here is sympathy that she has to endure the shots. There are several serums that must be done IM and it hurts me to do/watch.
